Amarone Classico DOCG Riserva 2013, Franchini

AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO, DOCG RISERVA-  2013, FRANCHINI

Amarone of Valpolicella Classico Riserva is a timeless wine, expression of a unique style for each vintage in which it is produced, which we follow from the beginning with absolute dedication. It is a wine that is produced only in the best vintages, i.e. when we have a unique balance both from a climatic point of view and from the point of view of the development of the vines. It is made from exclusively classic, traditional Valpolicella vines, located in a specific geographical area our “Cru” Costa d’Angelo. It brings with it the continuous and unstoppable course of time, each time giving sensations of inexhaustible source of inspiration, intrinsic to the vintage in which we decide to produce it.

It wears impenetrable garnet with superb shades that turn slightly to orange tones. The nose impacts on immediate sensations of humus notes, black pepper spices, cinnamon with fascinating and sinuous scents arranged on toasted blond tobacco, cocoa and coffee powder, then enlivened by fresh balsamic notes, mentholates, liquorice and then turn on fruity notes of plum and cherry jam, medlar, plum, blackberry bramble. On the palate there is an immediate sensation of warm and velvety softness, rediscovering elegance in the soft fruity returns and dense but smooth tannins that balance the alcoholic sensation, perfectly integrated in an imposing structure. Important closure, long persistence, elegant, sapid, very clean at times almost poignant, difficult to forget.

ABOUT FRANCHINI WINERY:

A built cellar respecting a tradition 300 years old.

The Franchini farm is based in Negrar di Valpolicella, in the Forlago area in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica.

The historic house was built by my predecessors around 1700 with the cellar built according to the techniques of the time with a “Romanesque face” and with stones and lime typical of the area.

  • Grape varieties: Corvina 50%, Rondinella 20%, Corvinone 15%, other varieties 10% (Spigamonte, Oseleta, Croatina, Molinara, Negrara, Turchetta)
  • Alcoholic percentage: 16% vol.
  • Lands: All the grapes come exclusively from the vineyards of the Franchini family, in the hilly area of Valpolicella Classica. In particular from a single precise geographical area our “Cru” Costa d’Angelo, composed mainly of 70% white clay and calcium carbonates, and 30% volcanic residues characterized by an altitude ranging from 300 to 400 meters above sea level.
  • Vine growing system: Veronese Pergola
  • Age of the vines: 60 – 100 years
  • Grape yield per hectare: 60 q/ha (quintals/ hectare)
  • Harvest: The harvest for the production of this wine is carried out by waiting for a short period of over-ripening of the grapes (ripening on plant), thus postponing the manual harvesting the first weeks of October. With manual harvesting the grapes are selected directly in the field by eliminating the grapes that are not completely ripe and choosing the sparser bunches, also selected for their size and technical and phenological maturity. The grapes are collected in 7 kg wooden boxes and placed in our drying rooms. The drying process varies greatly depending on the vintage, including an interval of 4 – 5 months, taking care to ensure and best conduct the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). At this stage the grapes can lose 40% – 50% of their initial weight and at the same time generate new types of aromas. In this phase, further rigorous selection or sorting is carried out on a weekly basis.
  • Vinification: After the “Appassimento” period, the grapes are lightly pressed by hand and then the must, together with the skins, is left to macerate for 7 days in stainless steel tanks before spontaneously triggering fermentation. The fermentation process lasts about 40 – 50 days, with daily pumping over of the must, alternating daily with delestage, carried out during the initial weeks of fermentation. The latter is a very important technique to ensure greater uniformity and colour extraction. The fermentation temperature is controlled daily, several times during the whole fermentation process as a fundamental parameter to preserve the integrity and aromatic preservation.
  • Barrel aging: Once fermentation is finished, the wine is divided into tonneaux (5 hl) and barriques (2.25 hl) of new-generation French oak of fine grain with woods coming exclusively from the French forests of Tronçais and Jupilles. All the barrels are changed annually to support the structure of this great wine, which remains in cask for a period of 48 months, very variable depending on the vintage.
  • Bottle aging: Bottle ageing consists of two consecutive processes. We have a first refinement in the bottle also called “reduction refinement” which is carried out without any exchange of O2 with the external environment, by the cap, through the application of lacquer wax on the head of the bottle. This refinement lasts for a minimum period of 12 months after the wine has been bottled to restore the body of the wine, momentarily destabilized by the filtration process. The second refinement, i.e. “refinement in oxidation”, is carried out by making two longitudinal holes that from the surface of the lacquer wax reach the one-piece cork stopper, allowing it to begin the exchange of air with the external environment, thus beginning the normal ageing process. This second refinement lasts for a minimum period of 12 months, after which the bottles are ready to be sold.
  • Bottle closure type: A natural Sardinian one-piece cork stopper, i.e. made of a single piece entirely of superior quality natural cork selected for its higher quality characteristics; it guarantees an excellent seal and, more importantly, a constant exchange of oxygen from the outside environment to the inside of the wine, allowing the wine to mature and evolve over time over the years. The choice of cork depends on the characteristics of the vintage.
  • Sensory Analysis: This description refers to the most recent vintage we have on the market 2013.
