The name “Recioto” is believed to be derived from the Latin word “recisus,” meaning “to cut off.” This refers to the ancient practice of cutting the grape clusters from the vine at the peak of ripeness, carefully selecting the best grapes for winemaking. The Romans recognized the potential of this winemaking method, developing it into an art form that would shape the future of winemaking in the region.
What sets Recioto apart is not just its ancient origins, but its unique winemaking process. The grapes are carefully harvested and left to dry for several months, allowing the natural sugars to concentrate. This extended drying period gives Recioto its distinctive sweetness and rich flavors.
The resulting wine is a symphony of aromas and flavors. Recioto wines are characterized by their deep ruby color and a bouquet of dried fruits, such as raisins, figs, and prunes. On the palate, they offer a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity, with notes of chocolate, honey, and spices. Each sip is a journey through time, a taste of ancient winemaking traditions.
Recioto has stood the test of time, retaining its popularity throughout the centuries. It has become a symbol of the Valpolicella region’s winemaking heritage and the craftsmanship of its artisans. Today, Recioto is celebrated as one of Italy’s finest dessert wines, cherished for its complexity, elegance, and the history it carries within each bottle.
